Castlemartin Corse - Marsh harrier meets fox!

A glorious morning at the Corse - light perfect. One marsh harrier (I've only seen one on my last couple of visits) has, as Richard C observed, taken to perching in a field, buzzard-fashion. It did so twice today, and on the first occasion I noticed a fox working the field about 20m away, nose to the ground. It finally stopped about 3-4 feet from the harrier and froze. The two looked at each other for several seconds before the harrier took off and sailed over the reedbed. It hunted up and down the reedbed, yellow legs dangling in the sunshine, scattering duck on the open water and about 200 lapwing and curlew that were in a field on the N side.

A concentration of small birds in the field E of the track down to the Gupton farm buildings from the Castlemartin-F West road - a flock of 150 skylarks, >100 linnet, and small nos of chaffinch, meadow pipit, reed bunting and house sparrow. Late yesterday afternoon over 1,500 lapwing were feeding on Gupton fields, a flock of 100 golden plover flying high.

Update p.m. The two marsh harriers were hunting over the reedbed together, scattering teal and snipe in all directions. N. side - 2 chough, 2 Cetti's, >100 curlew and >300 lapwing feeding on the grassy slopes.
