Martletwy this morning and Slebech starling roost 2 nights ago

Most of the recent winter thrush flocks (fieldfares in particular) have now moved on. There are still small numbers of redwings feeding on the hedgerow berries. This morning saw a slight increase in the number of finches in our garden - mostly chaffinches, a few goldfinches and 2 bramblings - the first we've seen here this autumn/winter.

Still no hawfinches here yet, although the latest graph from the BTO (showing the percentage of hawfinch records being entered to complete bird lists in BirdTrack) indicates just how often they've been recorded in the UK during the last few weeks. There is no sign of the reporting rate dropping off just yet, so hopefully one will pass through our area some time soon!

We had another look at the Slebech reedbed starling roost a couple of evenings ago - numbers there are still rising - we reckoned that there must have been c.100,000 or so. The roost had spread out and covered more of the reedbed compared with their distribution there a week or so ago. The only obvious raptor around this time was a peregrine. It had probably finished hunting and was heading off in a SE direction presumably to a coastal roost somewhere. It was well after sun-set when it flew over us and getting quite dark.
