With the amazing support of 25+ volunteer surveyors, last winter we surveyed the wintering farmland bird populations at 9 NT farms around Mid and North Pembrokeshire. It was a huge success, having gained a huge amount of valuable data which will inform our management and help us to improve our farmland for wildlife.
We would like to continue these surveys annually, so this winter we will be surveying these farms again with the addition of two more NT farms. Many of last year's volunteers have signed up again, but we still are looking for more volunteers to help with the surveys, particularly in North Pembrokeshire.
What is required of the surveyor?
The methodology is a simplified version of the BTO methodology, where a group of 2-4 surveyors walk a set transect across a series of numbered fields. For each field, every species and number present is recorded. We are aiming for 3 visits per farm, between 1st November 2019 and 28th February 2020.
The map below shows the farms in North Pembrokeshire where we are looking for volunteers to help survey the farmland birds this winter.
If anyone is interested in helping to carry out these surveys this winter, please email me at james.roden@nationaltrust.org.uk with a preference of which farm or farms you would be able to survey.
Thanks!
James
