We managed to watch the pied wagtail roost at Withybush hospital this evening. We estimated a minimum of c.650 wagtails roosting at their usual location. They gathered on roof-tops and in nearby trees from about 15:50 hrs onwards. All those we could see well enough had entered the roost by about 17:30 hrs. It was getting too dark for us to determine incoming stragglers from local movements within the roost by then.
Whilst watching the wagtails begin to assemble we noted some 10-15,000 starlings flying over towards the Slebech Miscanthus roost. Although we've not watched this roost so far this winter, it's our impression that starling numbers are lower in the general area.
