A New Year's day walk along Bosherston Lakes eastern arm this morning in dull, drizzly conditions was fairly quiet bird-wise. Five tufted ducks (2 adult males) and 15 goosanders (3 adult males) being the highlight. Numbers of waterfowl otherwise are still very low here, although coot numbers (c.23) had at least reached double figures.

Head feathers raised: these two males occasionally sparred with each other while the females appeared less interested - Spring in the air already?

After another skirmish, a shake of the wings and a victorious dominant posture perhaps?

Noting the swift observation posted earlier, presumably one brought up this way by the fairly warm southerly airflow. We noted them arriving on the Algarve in very early January last winter. Perhaps this one has come up from that area? A good bird to start the new decade with anyway.

Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year
