We walked one of our regular circuits from Landshipping to Coedcanlas though Sam's Wood and back to Landshipping along the Cleddau shore this afternoon. It was nice to see a few more swallows back in expected locations and another whitethroat back on territory. Lots of butterflies too plus dozens of green longhorn moths laying their eggs on the new oak leaves along the shore route back.
Four greylags were on the move. They appeared to be heading over in the approx the direction of Carew. Perhaps they'll be somewhere in Richard's "exercise walking" patch tomorrow?

One day they will be White-fronts! |
A male
cuckoo was calling in the distance - probably on the opposite side of the river somewhere in Benton Wood. A local person at Coedcanlas described hearing the bubbling call of a female cuckoo in the area earlier today so there could be a pair around.
Along the shore, as well as a few territorial shelduck pairs, we also noted a couple of whimbrels plus two greenshanks and a black-tailed godwit with quite a serious head injury - possibly the result of a raptor attack?
Yesterday there were c.20 or more black-tailed godwits feeding at Landshipping Quay. They had gone by today. Sadly this one won't be joining them.
