A desire to walk some quiet country lanes, and also what felt like the faint hope of seeing my first Yellowhammer of the year, took me to the Hasguard Cross/Talbenny area this afternoon towards the edge of my 5-mile radius.
An unexpected bonus was the sound of a Lesser Whitethroat coming from a hedge alongside the road. As I listened and waited patiently, it briefly appeared at the top of the hedge, before flying off. On the way back to the car, I heard and eventually located a distant singing Yellowhammer. Not long afterwards, I heard two further males singing from the opposite direction, near Hasguard Cross.
