1st July, arrived at Strumble at 1445 to find Ken there who has had two BN dolphins pass by (v.unusual) into the bay. Only one glimpse of a porpoise over the next couple of hours (maybe because of BND's?),Had been hearing young Auks calling previous day, none on this session. but a steady stream Gannets passing west.
As the porp action was so slow, I began looking at the Gannets , Ken and I had both been commenting on the amount of sub adults passing by, before he left
I had not been counting to begin with or paying particular notice. As I began to examine the Gannets passing by out of the bay, it soon became apparent they were predominantly sub-adults of year groups ranging from last years juveniles to birds with only a few black secondaries and odd black tail feathers. A very grey looking Bonxie also passed by.heading west.
About four o clock I was joined by Stevo and Tony and soon after by Paul and Jack from Croes Goch, They told me that there had been at least 60 sub-adult Gannets loafing on the sea by the flagpoles in Goodwick!.
I would guess that normally the ratio of adult gannets to sub-adults would be about five adults to one sub adults probably more in the adults favour.. My guess would be that the opposite was the case over the two and a half hours i was there., all a bit odd!
