Red-backed shrike, Marloes Mere (and the Glossy ibis)

Having heard the Glossy ibis may have left the Gann, I thought a look around Marloes Mere might be worth a try, but it was pretty deserted. The walk across towards Martin's Haven was similarly quiet. But just shows only takes one nice bird to brighten up an evening when a juv Red-backed shrike popped into view. It was sitting on the fence by the double-gates (SM 77010 07997) and I'd almost dismissed it as a Linnet, argghh! It flew up and I lost sight as it disappeared into the cover of the earthworks. I scanned with the scope and did a couple of circuits around the earthworks but no further sightings. However on the returning to near to where I'd first seen it, a large dor beetle had been freshly impaled (legs still wriggling) on the barbwire! I retreated and watched the spot with the scope for 15-20 minutes but it didn't reappear. Hopefully it may still be around tomorrow. I concentrated my search on the earthworks but the bird could well have been using the perimeter of the stony field.

While returning to the car park, Ian S phoned to say he was watching 5 Glossy ibis at the Gann, so a quick dash to catch up with them before the light went. (Derek just made it as well). And Ian reports the Osprey went to roost towards Dale.
