Castlemartin Corse

Heavy rain and flooded meadows were good news for wildfowl and waders, if not for the farmer's big bales. After a fruitless hour in the hide, having approached from the seaward end, I headed for the upper part of the Corse which can be accessed below Castlemartin Church (follow the lane down, turn left past the sewage works). Here the meadows were extensively flooded, with good numbers of wigeon, mallard, teal, lapwing, golden plover and a few black-tailed godwit. There were a few greylags, and I even counted 5 shoveler - it's been a couple of winters since I've seen such good wildfowl numbers. A blocked ditch will have helped, hopefully it will stay wet for a while. The moment it floods, the birds arrive.

No sign of harriers - or any raptors - at either end.
