Just to say while we are all seeing the results of covid and are aware of the need for good hygiene same goes for our feathered friends.
A recent decline in Greenfinches has been linked to an outbreak of trichomonosis, a parasite-induced disease which prevents the birds from feeding properly.
So we thoroughly clean our hanging feeders every time we fill them, I use a kitchen towel dipped in a vinegar solution and once a week dismantle the feeders and give them a good wash in hot soapy water.
Happy to say we have at least a dozen Greenfinches fattening up on sunflower hearts that should be in good nick when the breeding season begins!
