Short-eared Owl

A short-eared Owl, flying high over Pencarnan mid afternoon today, heading in the direction of Ramsey.

We have two fields here at Pencarnan Camp, recently seeded with Spring barley and attracting Wheatears in good numbers during the past four days. Soon after sunrise the first birds appear, arriving in small flocks throughout the A.M. and half the P.M. Feed and move on. Friday 16th their numbers peaked. How many? Difficult to know: 100+? A mid-afternoon count revealed 43 between the two fields.

The camp's first Common Whitethroat today, five days later than last year and seven days later than 2019. Anything to do with the cold winds?
