Fishguard and Newport

A trip up to Goodwick/Fishguard this morning produced the usual small number of waders near the Flagpoles and two adult Med Gulls with other gulls, but we did not see a Yellow-legged there today. One of our now scarcer ducks, a Pochard (female), was resting on the sea out in the bay.

Pochards used to be a relatively common overwintering duck species at some freshwater waters, a key area for them in the past being Bosherston Lakes.

At lower Fishguard the most interesting species included  a Common Sandpiper and a Dipper that was initially feeding near the bridge before it flew downstream and across the shore. At Newport two  Common Sandpipers were feeding on the shore (one north of the bridge; one south of the bridge). Gull numbers there were lower than when we were there last week, but three un-ringed adult Med Gulls dropped in to bathe along side c.100 or so Black-headed Gulls, small numbers of Herring and Common Gulls. Two smart adult Yellow-legged Gulls were also present while we were there.
