Cuckoo, Penlan Heath

Despite the blustery wind I thought I heard a Cuckoo on a walk up from Sychbant in the Cwm Gwaun to Carn Ingli. Very conveniently it landed right in front of me, on the PCNPA footpath sign on the restored heath, apparently wanting to be photoed.

The cuckoo then flew left, as directed, to the top of the only remaining tall conifer on the heath and was mobbed by Meadow Pipits. The heath was a conifer plantation until about 15 years ago. Sheep have been kept out and it is now covered with heather, gorse, bramble and small scrubby trees with plenty of Mipits, Stonechats and Whitethroats, as well as butterflies and dragonflies on calmer days.

This cuckoo might even be the same individual that I saw at the Ty Canol rocky outcrop last week, last seen flying west over Cilgwyn valley towards Carn Ingli, and only about 4km away.

On Saturday another Cuckoo was calling and flying around the edge of the heath at Plumstone Mountain and one or possibly two females flying from Causeway Plantation over Dudwell Mountain.
