Nightjars, Ty Rhyg

A second visit of the season turned up 2 churring nightjars last night. Brief low level churring started around 9:25pm, followed by a quiet spell until 10'ish when Paul and I heard churring coming from a different spot. Once the light levels had dropped sufficiently we began to pick up churring in more earnest and from more elevated positions and eventually spotted a bird silhouetted on top of some conifers who did a wing clapping flight. Advice for anyone going to see them/hear them, don't expect churring too early usually 15-20 minutes after sunset (sunset last night was 9:40pm), keep to the main tracks and walk quietly through the lower sections of the forest. Remember these are breeding birds so please no tape luring which will interfere with them setting up territories and spoil other birders enjoyment. It would be interesting to find out where else we may have nightjars, plenty of other spots to checkout on the Preselis, the Gwaun and clearfells around the Cleddau etc
