The four colour ringed oystercatchers in Derek's post yesterday are all local birds. 01 was ringed as a juvenile on 3 Oct 2015 and has been recorded 62 times mainly at the Gann. It has also been recorded on Skokholm and Skomer. The others have an almost identical history, but were ringed more recently in 2017 and 2019.
Although these birds aren't making spectacular migrations like other waders, the regular resightings mean that their survival can be very accurately monitored, which is the main aim of the Gann wader project. All resightings are very gratefully received and we now have over 1750 for oystercatcher (Thanks Dave A!). From these we know that the Gann oystercatchers include resident, regular winter visitors, and sporadic visitors such as the one ringed after a cold snap in March 2018 and resighted in early April in NW Iceland.
