A surprisingly chill, stiff westerly had brought gulls onto the water early. 2,000 BH gulls, 1,500 Herring gull, set against just 200 LBBs at 4pm. Rising to 2,500 BH gull, 2,000 Herring gull and 500 LBBs at 4:30pm. After a couple of small roosts and just when I was wondering if the LBBs had already left for their breeding grounds they appeared in numbers with thousands swarming in from the south and west at 4:45pm (in recent weeks they've typically arrived from the east). No count made but the roost stretched from the big field up to beyond the hide, with stacks of birds in the bay. Both Glaucous gulls roosted, dropping in at 5pm (up towards the hide) and 5:15pm (just opposite the big field). As gulls come to roost they usually have a good bathe with lots of wing flapping which is a good way to spot a big pale gull. Top photo: Flapping Herring gull left, LBB middle and Glaucous on the right.
Otherwise: 10 Mediterranean gulls (8 adults, 1 3cy, 1 2cy), 4 Yellow-legged gulls with a pair showing some courting/bonding behaviour. 9 Greylag among the Canadas in the field on the west side. Single drake Goldeneye. 4-5 GC grebe, Little grebe and a Kite.
