Our Thursday Sea Trust Porpoise Photo ID session (11.00-13.00 calm, good viz) had porpoises over most of the session. Whimbrel x1 heard and seen, Chough x2, less hirundines, just a few Swallows.
A Carrion Crow persistently chased a male Kestrel in an awesome aerobatic display around the cliff top and over our heads, but after a minute or so the crow gave up on the more agile kestrel.
It was apparent the Kestrel had some small prey item in its talons which the crow wanted! It had me wondering if the calorific value of the prize was worth the competition, but the Kestrel obviously has young somewhere along the coast towards Fishguard.
It occurred to me that my recent sightings of a
late-staying overwintering Merlin may have actually been the Kestrel's mate, not
sure, but most sightings were fleeting, so hands up, I may have been guilty of
misidentification.
