That Curlew Sandpiper

Well done to Caroline for getting the photograph that was able to clinch the colour ring code on the Curlew Sandpiper at the Gann in June.  An adult in Pembrokeshire in June is unusual enough in itself, that it was ringed at the southern tip of India in November 2022 is simply astonishing!  Just goes to show the value of colour-ringing, which enables field birders and photographers to support the excellent science being undertaken by the ringers.

According to Google Maps, the ringing location is 8,794km from the Gann (and that is in direct flight).....just wow.  I've seen a lot of colour-ringed birds at the Gann over the years, but nothing quite as astonishing as this.
