A bit of a Ruff Day

Coincidentally I was on the way to the Gann when Derek posted about the Spoonbill, but I  I did not manage to find it on the river or the marsh. However there was a good variety of waders, but apart from 100÷ Curlew, mostly in small numbers - on the beach were Ringed Plover 2, Dunlin 4, Whimbrel 2, plus Little Egret 12 including Dave's Monday colour-ringed white N/ yellow? and on the lagoon were Redshank 24, Greenshank 7, a pair of Common Sandpipers and singles of Knot, Black-tailed Godwit and a Ruff. Also of note were the number of juvenile Grey Herons - 2 on the lagoon with 2 adults and another 4 with just a single adult at the top of the marsh.

An afternoon  trip to Marloes Mere turned up 5 more Ruff, 3 in the stream channel with another 2 on the mud to the east of the hide. At least two were juveniles. Otherwise it was generally quiet, with no raptors and just a pair of Snipe, but over 130 Lesser Black-backed gulls settled for a while with a few Greaters and Herrings. There were plenty of Swallows, nearly all juveniles, and not a single Sand Martin or House Martin for the first time in months. With a flock of about 50 Starlings and another of 250 Jackdaws, along with a cool northerly breeze, it felt a lot like autumn is arriving.
