I did the Webs count at Castlemartin Corse this morning in company with Morris North and John Best. Water levels were down though there is still a fair bit of water in front of the reedbed.
At the far, east, end of the Corse and on the northern flanks there were plenty of Golden Plover - 1200 - and Lapwing - 790 - with some great displays when they all got up and flew around, probably disturbed by a large female Sparrowhawk. Also at the east end 6 Greylags and 65 Curlew.
By the reedbed there were 137 Teal, 55 Mallard, 44 Wigeon, 14 Shoveller 2 Gadwall and a lone drake Pintail. 29 Snipe were seen altogether. One Marsh Harrier was see briefly over the reeds and near the beach end of the Corse Morris was lucky enough to see a Bittern as it flew off over to the main part of the reedbed.
Once again there was a dearth of small birds with just a handful of Meadow Pipits, Reed Buntings and Robins though 8 or more Stonechats were seen.
