Pembroke Millponds in the drizzle

Despite the murky weather, we needed some fresh air and a break from computer work late this afternoon. A walk around the Pembroke Millponds to see if the Lesser Yellowlegs was still there seemed doable even in the heavy drizzle.

It was still there after 17:00 hrs in the previously reported location – blending in well with the exposed muddy shoreline and seemingly unfazed by us, or nearby passing dog-walkers and joggers etc. Recollections of the Bosherston Central Lake bird, found by David Little, myself and others back in October 1984, were that it wasn't particularly bothered by large numbers of people passing by.

Other species were much as reported earlier although we noted 20 feeding dunlin in two separate flocks.

We were quite impressed by the mallard numbers on the pond system – at least 150 or more on the middle pond alone. Looking back at WeBs totals, the previous highest mallard count for all the three ponds combined was 176 in December 1997. It’ll be interesting to see if this total is beaten by this month’s WeBs count there.
