New Year............Thank You

Many thanks to all who have contributed to Pembsbirds, in a variety of ways over the last year.
Please continue to support us in 2010;
Have a Happy New Year.....

Spoonbill

checked pembroke river at 11am and one of the Spoonbills is still there.
Happy New Year to everyone.

Landshipping

Took a stroll along the shore between Landshiping slipway and the quay and quite a good variety of species were present. Most notable (at least to me) was a flock of 135 pintail on the sprinkle side - never seen anywhere near this number before in pembs. Also a Jack Snipe and 20 + snipe flushed from shore near the slipway, thousands of Lapwing but only 150 Golden Plover. Two Peregrines soared high over Sprinkle causing all the ducks to shuffle nervously into the water and a redhead merganser fished in the channel. There were loads of song thrush, redwings and blackbirds in the fields behind but otherwise passerines were in short supply. Happy new year, Paddy

Chough on Poppit beach -- Teifi

This Chough was working away at exposed roots along the bank of Poppit Beach car park this afternoon. It was very busy there with dogs, children and cars. The Chough took little notice and carried on foraging.
I've never seen a Chough there before.

Solva Harbour ---

Hi everyone,
We think we spotted a Black-necked Grebe in Solva Harbour today (New Year's Eve).

Gann & Otter!!

Much the same as Derek at the Gann late afternoon, all I can add is a single Great Northern Diver in the bay, and an adult Med Gull out in the roost (most of the birds very distant!).

Highlight of the day, and a fantastic way to end the year, was a large (presumably dog) Otter which trotted across the road at Mullock Bridge right in front of the car as we headed home at dusk! It lingered briefly by the roadside, disappeared under an old pallet next to the bridge, and then reappeared as it hopped over the bank and into the river, heading upstream. The first Otter encounter I've had on the Dale Peninsula in over 21 years of visiting! Magic.

Goodwick (31 Dec 09)

No sign of any Med Gulls this afternoon.
2 Ringed Plover on beach with 6 Turnstone, 1 Bar Tailed Godwit, 3 Redshank and 3 Curlew.

One last look.....

Had a quick scan at the mere, usual Teal, Shovelor, Wigeon. c1000 Lapwing over Winterton farm, 1 Golden Plover over the YHA.
The Lagoons at the Gann, viewed from the road, had 24 Brent inc. KLWR ringed female, 2 Shelduck, 1 R/B/Merganser & 2 G/C/Grebes on the sea.

Hen Harrier at Martin's Haven

Having looked in vain for any sort of raptor at Marloes Mere this morning, a ringtail Hen Harrier flew past our window during lunch today. It worked its way down the Deer Park wall and rath, then up to the Coastwatch lookout before flying over the haven towards West Hook. Nice way to end the year!

The starling roost debate

Noted Paddy's observations of route being taken by starlings, suggesting another possible starling roost somewhere in the Tenby area. My guess is that it is the roost at Kiln Park caravan site. Large numbers often congregate in the mature Cupressus trees bordering the site. It is usually occupied each winter (variable numbers) but I have not personally checked whether they are roosting there at present. I don't think they will have been using the Bosherston reedbed roost. Although this is still occasionally used they appear there now in nothing like the numbers they did quite regularly in colder winters 20-25 years ago.

A small flock of redpolls (probably all lesser) mixed with siskins and goldfinches are regularly coming to nyjer seed at Whitehill, Cresselly. The redpolls are regular at the feeders outside a kitchen window and today I watched really well marked adult males (breast already flushed bright pink) from about 3 feet away. In fact pretty well all the plumage details were fairly easy to see without the need of any optical assistance. Quite a colourful site and nice to see dozens of mixed Carduelis finches feeding together at such close range.

Other recent observations have included firecrest, 3 goosanders and about 7-8 great-crested grebes at Llys-y-Fran reservoir (on Boxing Day) and green sandpiper at a small pond at Norchard on Christmas Day (One or two green sands seem to regularly winter at ponds in the Lydstep, Manorbier Newton area - where noted in previous years). Wigeon, shelduck and teal numbers had increased quite markedly on the Carew/Cresswell rivers the other day but wader numbers (notable dunlin) were still very low despite the cold snap. Black-tailed godwits present but not as many as seen by Annie on Cosheston Pill (60) on Sunday.

Starlings

At Slebech this evening about 5000 starlings passed overhead in seven different groups, but none stopped. They all headed approx SSE between 4:15 and 4:35. Not sure where they were roosting but if they kept going in the same direction they would get to Tenby area. In the mornings at Narberth they are all heading north so it seems likely that the starlings in this part of pembs don't use the Dudwell site. A few years ago there was a massive roost in reeds on Pendine range which persisted right through to March, but this site seems too far east for the birds seen tonight. Penally marshes maybe?

Starling challenge progress.

Was Mark's observations at Bwlch y groes an indication that there is no longer a Preseli roost? Were his birds going to an unknown roost in the valley of the Cych or going further on into Carmarthenshire? Anyone curious enough to find out?

Plumstone Starlings

After a rather anxious (and very wet) wait, the Starlings turned up at 1610 tonight, and proceeded to stream in astonishing numbers for the next 25+ minutes. We were standing at the bottom of the Eastern edge of the wood, and saw the birds coming in, generaly downwind, over a pretty narrow arc: from roughly 060 degrees through to 170 degrees, most on about 100 degrees. Not many raptors in evidence in the blustery wind: a pair of utterly inneffectual Buzzards, and a Kestrel and Sparrowhawk. Another birder got a glimpse of a harrier. Flushed a Woodcock.

Marloes

My dogs decided I needed some exercise despite the weather, so they dragged me off to Marloes. Needless to say, nothing much happening - the only highlight being a male Peregrine with afterburners ignited, firing into a flock of Starlings, panicking c140 Lapwing. (why wasn`t it white?) By way of some diversion - read this for an interesting viewpoint about twitching/birding! http://braddersbirdingblogspot.com/ (Mon/21/12/09)
Elsewhere, 5-6 Bullfinches in the hedgerows & a glimpse of a female blackcap in the garden.

starlings -- latest update

I reckon well over a million last night (could easily have been 2 million or more)- absolutely huge numbers putting on a magnificent show; biggest this year by far. Hen Harriers (one making a spectacular strike) and a Peregrine also present, along with usual buzzards.

Deer Park: Snipe and Med Gulls

Relatively quiet out here in the last few days, but 2 Snipe flushed on the Deer Park yesterday. The remnants of a large finch flock on the Trehill Farm fields are still in evidence, but now down to 100+ birds (vs. 3-4x that a few weeks ago); mainly Chaffinches, some Goldfinches and Greenfinches.

Lots of Song Thrushes on the Deer Park and in Martin's Haven valley, as well as slightly smaller numbers of Blackbirds.

Not much on the sea off Wooltack except for small numbers of auks. No Red-throated Divers seen at all this year so far: the same period of 2006 had a regular 3-5 divers there. However, the North-flowing tide again produced a steady feeding party of c200 Black-headed Gulls, together with a couple of immature Kittiwakes and at least 2 (probably several times this) Mediterranean Gulls. One of these was an adult with a partially developed black hood and a heavy bill: very distinctive against the other gulls. It is possible that a significant proportion of those Med Gulls that appear in the Dale Roads gull roost in the evenings spend at least a proportion of their "working day" in Jack Sound.

roost flightlines

About a week ago I was watching many thousands of starling flying over Bwlch-y-groes heading east.

Starling roosts

Observations and pictures of Starling roosts entertain us on the blog from time to time. Do we know how much these roosts have changed over time? "The Birds of Pembrokeshire", 1994, listed roosts, catchment areas and flight-lines. Are these elements still the same, particularly regarding the largest roost at Dudwell/Plumstone? The book also mentions a large roost in the plantations of Mynydd Preseli. Is there still a roost there now that many of the trees have been felled? If not where do birds feeding in that area by day go to roost?
The active and alert blog-network might find it interesting to answer these questions.

Newport -- waders

Richard,
I have seen several references to the black tailed Godwit off Newport bridge but not seen a photograph so here is one taken today (Monday). I saw no bar tailed Godwits today – just the usual gulls, one heron, one redshank and one little egret. The photograph of the redshank was taken, also today at the Creek hide, Welsh Wildlife Centre, Cilgerran. There was also 4 or 5 Snipe there among the 100+ Teal but I did not get a good photograph of them.

Happy New Year to you and all contributors to the Blog.

Plumstone -- Starlings

Hi,
I viewed this roost from the rock, they soon vanished from view as more gathered, do they go behind the woods as viewed from plumstone rock?

Starling Roost -- Plumstone

Is it worth mentioning that the Starlings at Plumstone are generally roosting in a different area to last year -
-- this year they seem to be heading to the northern end of the wood, behind the industrial buildings. The roost can be reached by following the woodland track for about 600 metres. I notice there are lots of cars at the road layby (where all the action was last year) and new observers are leaving somewhat disappointed when they miss the main spectacle.
Hope this helps
Mark Charlton, Llandeloy

starlings

This was also a cold visit to Plumstone mt., but was great to see all those starlings flying in. A million, I haven't a clue, but if anyone has counted them well done. Thankyou Wendy

Also approx 200 lapwing flew over shortly before the main event.

Manorbier-Jameston area tetrad-bashing

This afternoon visiting tetrads - lapwings (c.400+) golden plovers (500+) feeding mainly in several Brassica fields. Song Thrushes greatly outnumbered blackbirds and redwings - probably around 100 seen in fields during a walk through 3 tetrads. Closer to Manorbier firecrest and black redstart both put in an appearance (the former on the village outskirts; the latter near Atlantic View. All in all a very pleasant afternoons birding.

Spotted Redshank -- Llangwm

All you need to know...
Hi Richard...

Living in such close proximity to Llangwm Pill I've been monitoring the birds around here for 30+ years (I currently do the WeBS count for Llangwm). As a matter of interest, the spotted redshank that Mervyn reported in the recent posting has been over-wintering with us in the Pill for the last 5 years. It was first 'spotted' one December day in 2005 by ex-Skomer warden Juan Brown when he himself was over-wintering in the village. I see it most days on my early morning walk around the shore. It turned up later this year in early October and, if true to form from previous years, will leave again at the end of March. There are two distinct parts of the Pill which it seems to favour for feeding and at high tide can always be picked out clearly as it joins the congregation of its common cousins either under the trees at Ferry Bay or on the rocks on the Rectory Point. Can I presume that it is the very same individual that returns year after year...or is it just a coincidence?

Seasons Greetings!
Graham Brace

The oldest known British ringed Spotted Redshank was 7 yrs 5 mths old -- shot in Morocco, originally ringed in Norfolk.(BTO)
The Finnish scheme does have the oldest recorded European bird at 8yrs 7 mths.
(EURING)

Woodcock

Just back from some upland fields nr Cilgwyn -- now thawed.
c18 Woodcock in 3 fields, including a group 4 & 2 more birds close by.

The oldest known European Woodcock, a Scottish bird ringed in 1921 & shot in 1937!
If Paddy keeps his Woodcock interest going ...he may better this, he ringed his 100th Woodcock of the year earlier this week (& has caught many more which others have ringed.)
--All part of a project by the Woodcock Ringing Network.

Plumstone mountain

A male Hen Harrier was the highlight of a very cold visit to the mountain. Also a Merlin.
The starling roost was as dramatic as ever with an estimate in excess of one million birds arriving from 16.20 to 16.35.

Rosebush Resr... Scaup

Rosebush Resr;-
The fem Scaup still & 7(1m)+ Goldeneye, & 7+ Tufted the highlights.
Llys-y-fran Resr;-
7+ Gt. Ctd. Grebes, the gull roost beginning to grow when I left, but it didn't look as it would be that large.

Gann

Highlights this afternoon: 23 Brents, 2 R B Mergs (fems), 1 G C Grebe, 1 1st W Med Gull, 1 Grey Plover, 11 Dunlin, 12 Turnstone, 13 Ringed Plover, 7 Redshank, 5 Little Egrets, 8 Reed Bunting.

On the way down around 50 Lapwing & 30 Golden Plover flew over the road east of Hasguard Cross, obviously using the fields there.

Have a peaceful festive season everyone.

Season's Greetings

Happy Christmas to all Bloggers and Viewers of Pembrokeshire Birds. Enjoy the festivities and good birding in 2010!

Flagpoles 16.00

2 New Ad. Med. Gulls at the Flapoles , 1 with a white plastic ring with black lettering but too distant to read with bins & the other had a very advanced black hood.

Black Redstart

I saw perhaps the same male Black Redstart that was with the female on Pen Anglas point at 12:30.

odds and...

On a bright still starlit night, Tawney Owls were calling from two seperate terretories, Trefwurgi and Carne farms. Woodcock sprung up from a couple of roadside mudpatches over the last few days, and a Buzzard paid particularly acute attention to my poultry today before I banged on the window to discourage it.
I heard lapwing in the gloaming as I put the chooks to bed but did not see if there were more than one.
Anyone interested in joining our "fun outing" to highlight the proposed Badger Cull in North Pembrokeshire on Cristmas Eve "The Great Escape" when several of us will dress as Badgers and escape to Cardigan via the Welsh Wildlife Centre Reserve and the bridge over the Teifi are welcome , meet at Welsh Wildlife Trust Car Park at 1 pm , bring warm drinks, scoff, and a sense of humour! we will provide Tee shirts and Badger Masks

Another leucistic Lapwing

I know what Dave means for it once happened to me, when noticing a leucistic Lapwing among a flock of normal birds near Hasguard Cross on 13 November 1983. First seen in flight the thought of juvenile Sociable Plover sprung to mind. It was not to be but it was an exciting event and a memorable bird.

reservoirs -- Scaup

Rosebush Resr;-
About 1/3 frozen, perhaps a decline in duck numbers, 1 fem Scaup, c7+ Goldeneye.

Llys-y-fran Resr;- -- treacherous roads!! & gates locked.

Flagpoles 16.00

Ad Med Gull on groyne to left of carpark.

Ramsey

2 black redstarts on the east coast this morning.

Leucistic Lapwing

Never seen one myself but one recently in Warwickshire, see

http://www.birdforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=232325&d=1260532384

If I saw something pale in a flock of Lapwing my heart would be racing before I clapped my 'bins on it!

Whooper Swan ...&.....last year......!

Some sightings from Rob Johns, Trefasser
This morning,1 Whooper Swan flying south towards St. David's.
Yesterday 2 Pochards on one of the ponds, & also a leucisitic Lapwing amongst the increasing nos. in the area.

On this date 22 Dec 2008, last year Rob had 5 Cattle Egrets feeding on his land, .......if only they would pay a return visit!!.......... Especially for Jan 1 2010!

Newport Mon pm

An influx of Teal upstream. The Black T Godwit seems partial to the mud just downstream from the bridge. Amongst the Gulls c 40 Commons & an ad Med.

Bosherston Lakes - pm

During the usual monthly WeBs count today, nothing especially numerous but goosander numbers have risen to 20 (interestingly 10 males and 10 females, some still possibly paired - I wonder if they have had a poor breeding season)? Goldeneye numbers had risen to 22 and little grebes to not less than 18. Most of the other species were in fairly low numbers. I think Bosherston is probably the only place that know where I can watch birds through binoculars with a robin perched on them, or on my wrist, as I scan the waterfowl etc. I guess most of you probably know what I mean and have also had this experience!

Comparing this weeks count with one I did this same week 25 years ago, the only major differences were 98 coot today (291 coot in Dec 1984). No pochard today (59 in Dec 1984 - soon to rise to 150+ by the years end)! There were no goosanders in Dec 1984 - they were rather rare and exceptional 25 years ago. It will have to get quite a bit colder I feel for coot and pochard numbers to get back to the levels they used to reach.

velvet birding .....& ....BoP !

Broad Haven;-
2 Velvet Scoter, also 120 Common Scoter, 3 Wigeon, & 10 Red Thd. Divers
St. David's Airfield;-

A total of 35 Brent on the lagoon & sea. All appeared light - unable to see any rings.
c40 Snipe, 10 Little Grebe, 18 Turnstone, 4 Ringed Plover, good numbers of Curlew & Oycs.
1 adult Med over, 1 Jay over, + wigeon,Teal, Goldeneye.
On the sea 2 Gt/N/Divers + 2 Gt/C/Grebes. A fabulous sunny day with a dead calm sea.

Goshawks at St Brides

Got to talk at length to one of the shooting syndicate who are feeding pheasants etc in the St Brides area. They confirmed that the pair of Goshawks I saw a month back are seen daily chasing the jackdaws and crows in this area. They seem to have been around in this area for several months according to the shooters.

They also reported an Osprey at Winsle pool SM832090 diving down to catch a fish and then spending most of the day perched on a telegraph pole - "about two weeks ago"

They have already put down 4 TONS of bird feed this winter and there are many wildbirds benefitting as well as the pheasants etc.

Amazing what we miss isn't it.

Sunday 20 December 2009

St.Davids Airfield

5 Whooper Swans on the big pond near the Airfield this morning, 3 of them young birds. There's a good chance they might stay around for a while. Also noted were about 30 Teal and a good number of Shoveler.

Brent

The colour-ringed Brent at the Gann was ringed on 21 October at Strangford Lough, seen there next day, and then not reported again until it appeared at the Gann on 6 December. Please check all Brents carefully and report any ring details to grahammcelwaine@btinternet.com.

Highlights of a nice walk around Marloes Mere yesterday afternoon were a ringtail Hen Harrier, 30+ Skylarks, 70+ Lapwing, 301 Canada Geese, 40+ Wigeon, 10+ Gadwall, 100+ Teal, 50+ Mallard, 100+ Chaffinch, a Redwing and at least 15 Song Thrush in a single Stubble Field before the Youth Hostel. Also a very noisy female Bullfinch.

Venturing out !

After the trip to the Gower yesterday the urge for a trip further afield was still upon me , especially when Fishguard Harbour could only produce a single Great Crested Grebe & a Barwit this morning so :
Llangloffan Fen : A look at the flash from the road by Jordanston Farm produced nothing.
Heathfield : Nothing on the pit but a Woodcock flushed down the lane & a fly over Stock Dove started to improve the day slightly.
Penberry : Approx. 70 Wigeon , 12 of each Teal & Mallard , a few Coot & Dabchicks , a Snipe & 30 Canada Geese.
Dowrog : The day ended on a high note with a Male & 2 Ringtail Hen Harriers & a Kestrel.

Castlemartin Corse Webs

Standing in for Richard Crossen, today I accompanied Morris North onto Castlemartin Corse for this month's Webs count.

It is always a treat to be with Morris who's upfront friendliness with the local farmers allows access to land I'd normally not be able to bird.

And such access today gave excellent views of 2 Hen Harriers and a juvenile female Marsh Harrier, the latter having been present on the Corse for several weeks.

As for the Webs count, flock numbers were unremarkable: Golden Plover 120, Lapwing +700, Curlew 200, Wigeon 170, Mallard 40, Teal 60, Little Grebe 2, visible Snipe 20, a single Merlin and Sparrowhawk and 2 Buzzards, but 200 Skylark and 28 Shoveler did impress. Mixed flocks of Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Linnet and Reed Bunting were unexceptional.

Siskin

A male Siskin briefly in the garden around the feeders at 9 o'clock this morning .

Gower Gyr

Following on from Richard's posting , a short while ago there was a thread on the Pembs. Blog about birding & how people started & why they enjoyed it . All present at the time when we saw the Gower Gyr today were completely ( and justifiably ) overawed by such a charismatic bird , whether it was a lifer as it was for some , as it was for even one of the long standing respected South West Wales birders present or re -born birders like original Pembs Birder John from Lincs. I think this is why we do it.

The Gower Gyr !!

A stunning visit to neighbours probably left Pembs thin on the ground !!
But The imm female "white" Gyr Falcon on the Gower, was a lifer for 3 & a new Welsh bird for at least 6 Pembs birders who made the trip today.
6 BOP on view --- the Hen Harrier a nice ad male (& no Red Kite or Peregrine in the six!)

Also Whoopers & Bewicks in the Towy Valley.

WeBs tomorrow !!

tegryn

New garden bird for me, a woodcock out in the open for a while but as it got lighter it moved off under cover.

Winter Atlas: SM84 and SM94 - more missing species?

Following on from the recent (missing) species list for SM71 and SM81 10 km squares placed on the BLOG, we have now listed species recorded in SM84 and SM94 during the first winter atlas that don't appear to have records entered in the current atlas to date. So, if anyone is heading out for a walk from Strumble to Fishguard for example, then hopefully some of these may be seen.

As in SM71 and SM81, some scarce species only ever appear occasionally at best and so may not occur at all during the entire Atlas recording period, but others are fairly common, or regularly occurring species that really ought to be found somewhere.

Although there is only one tetrad in SM84 and three covering SM94, please try to assign records to tetrads - this extra information will be especially useful for our local atlas needs. As in previous Blog comments, if you have already seen any of these birds, or other interesting species and entered them on the BLOG, please also enter them on line via BirdTrack. From here they will be picked up by the Atlas and all Bird Track records will be available to the County Bird Recorders for the next Bird Report.

Stock Dove

1 Bird flying up out of stubble as I past a field nr. Llangloffan this pm, of this rarely recorded & reported species..... hopefully this posting might encourage a bit more recording....?

Black Redstarts

2 Black Redstarts on Pen Anglas point at least from 12:30 to 13:15, a male and a female.

Gyr

ps - for those who don't follow Birdguides or similar, you may be interested to know that there is a juvenile female white phase Gyr Falcon showing well on the Gower today, having first been seen briefly yesterday.

Velvets & that Jackdaw

2 Velvet Scoter on the sea just north of Broad Haven at lunchtime today, appeared to be females/imm males. They were separate to the two flocks of Common Scoter, which numbered around 100. Sea a little choppy. In the garden late afternoon the presumed Nordic Jackdaw, which I haven't see for some time (but is presumably in the area (semi-)permanently).

The Gann

26 Brent, inc the colour ringed bird that Dave saw last week.
8 Wigeon, 2 Gt/C/Grebes were really the only birds of note.
I had a look at St Ishmaels sewage works, but with ongoing construction work there was nothing to be seen - but it appears work may be suspended for the christmas break.

Cold weather movements on Castlemartin peninsula

With the colder easterlies this week, have arrived good numbers of lapwing and golden plover. At least 3,000 lapwings and 2,000 golden plovers on Castlemartin Range on Wedns - spread across several fields. Redwings (about 500) with thousands of starlings generally across the peninsula. Firecrests (x5 at least) around Bosherston Lakes with several chiffchaffs and blackcaps. Perhaps many more birds could be heading west by this weekend?

We are also noting down the species so far missing from 10km squares in the current winter atlas, compared with what was recorded in the 1981-84 winter atlas. Below is a list of species missing from SM71 and SM81 for example:

Great-crested Grebe SM81
Red-necked Grebe SM81
Gannet SM81
Mute Swan SM81
Bewick ‘s Swan SM81
Shelduck SM81

Snipe SM71
Woodcock SM81
Curlew SM71
Greenshank SM81
Turnstone SM71
Glaucous Gull SM81
Razorbill SM71
Stock Dove SM81
Barn Owl SM81
Little Owl SM81
Tawny Owl SM81
Short-eared Owl SM81
Fieldfare SM71

Mistle Thrush SM71
Chiffchaff SM81
Firecrest SM81
Willow Tit SM81
Chough SM71 SM81
Raven SM71
Brambling SM81
Reed Bunting SM71

If anyone can get over to these squares to do some roving-recording and find any of the missing species, this will boost the records considerably in these squares. Are we really that deficient now in waterfowl and waders in SM81 for example? Raptors/owls are also a bit thin!

Otters

Reference the e-mail from wdigbirder concerning the Otter at Abermawr, local fishermen have been reporting sightings of Otter for the last 2 years from sites along the coast from Abercastle up towards
Abermawr, and I thought that they were winding me up !!!!!!!!!!!

Graham Tierney

Marloes Mere

Lots more duck on the Mere than of late - perhaps a bit of cold weather movement. Nothing unusual but good numbers particulalrly of Wigeon, Teal and Shoveler.
On the adjoining field 370 Canada Geese - the farmer is in love with them and his sheep are starving!!!!!!

On the Deer Park this morning just four Chough, a couple of Skylarks and a few Stonechat but some Song Thrush in Martins Haven valley too - otherwise very quiet.

Strictly......... Gulls !!!

From Peter Stewart of The Severn Estuary Gull Group,
(part of a reply to Sam)

I received 58 sightings of our gulls yesterday. Most of our birds are currently being seen down in Spain and Portugal at the present where there are numerous active groups and individuals. There is a party of birders currently in Morocco looking for colour rings and hope to have sightings of our birds down there. I have received 9360 sightings of our gulls so far this year and this should jump up to around 11,000 by the years end. These will be made up of local sightings, and at tips where we have ringed. I have one watcher who spends every day visiting up to three sites in Gloucestershire and he records at least 120 colour rings each day. Also another individual who send in some 30 – 45 sightings daily from a Gloucester landfill site. I used to spend many hours on landfill sites doing the same thing but cannot find the time. Quite a lot of activity goes on behinds the scenes but it would not work if it were not individuals who bother to report colour rings. And long may it continue.
Best wishes,
Peter

Glynaeron Forest

PM today. Not much in the forest of note apart from 1 woodcock, but on the hill opposite the
entrance were 10, yes ten, Red Kites. The most I have seen in one view in Pembrokeshire.

Highlights were a (the) Black Tailed Godwit 10 m away at the Bridge & a Gloucester Landfill ringed Herring Gull. And whenever I see a Little Egret I realize how different the jizz is to the Egrets Walrus & I saw a couple of days ago. Has there been another influx of Cattle Egrets?

Deer Park & Marloes Mere

A belated post for yesterday

A wonderful calm clear morning, with the Deer Park very quiet apart from a few Blackbirds, the odd Song Thrush and Stonechats, and a Grey Wagtail feeding by the stream.
A really good build-up of Black-headed Gulls (c.200) dip-feeding in Jack Sound on the south-flowing tide, plus a few Razorbills and Guillemots. The 6 Whooper Swans reported earlier flew directly overhead at about 1030.
Later, as the tide flowed northwards, the number of smaller gulls increased to probably 300+, spread out over a fairly wide area, and feeding very actively in groups of 20-30. It included a handful of Kittiwakes and at least 3 adult Mediterranean Gulls, as well as some of the larger sp.

Huge flocks of finches on the Trehill Farm fields: 400+ Linnets in one field alone, several flocks of 50+ Chaffinches, smaller numbers of Greenfinches, Goldfinches, Mipits and Skylarks, and a couple of Snipe.

Marloes Mere
Wonderful views of 2 Water Rails about 5 yards away in the long straight channel to the left of the Britton Hide. 20+ Reed Bunting, 3 Bullfinch and all the usual duck but no Harriers.

Last Thursday!!

Sorry but just got back to Pembs so some belated bits and pieces:-

Thursday 10th December
Kilpaison - 16 Barwit, c.300 Dunlin, a Sanderling, a Knot, 95 Curlew, 16 LB Brents, 98 Wigeon and a grebe at max bino distance but looked very like Black necked on shape and general colour.

at Freshwater West - over 700 cattle in the coastal fields plus c.1500 Lapwing with another 300 in the top field above Gupton so total c.1800. A small flock of Golden Plover briefly and some distant small finch flocks. I spent most of the time looking at the amazing numbers of cattle!!!!

Today - 14th at Kilpaison - loads of Blackbrids and Song Thrushes in the fields and the dominant hedge bird was probably Bullfinch. striking how many there are in this area. just 12 Brents on the mud but the tide was way way out.

Whooper Swans ...&...

Nr. Trefasser;-
c16:00 this evening, 6 Whooper Swans flying towards the Mathry area.
(Rob Johns)
Our guess that Heathfield GP & Llangloffan Fen may be worth a look if they didn't fancy going much further tonight?

Also c2 weeks ago Rob had 15-18 "grey geese" fly through, again in the Mathry direction.

Water Pipit and Divers

The Water Pipit was showing well on Newgale marsh with at least 47 Snipe early afternoon. 3 Rock Pipits were on the campsite.

In St Brides bay, viewing from Goultrop, Broad Haven, Druidston and Newgale a total of 22 Red-throated Divers and 3 Great Northern Divers. Also 180+ Common Scoter with 1 Wigeon amongst them.

1 Black-tailed Godwit from the Iron Bridge.

Teifi;-
A LT look, c200 Wigeon mainly on Patch, c25 Dunlin, c15 Ringed Plover, scattered on the mud. 3 Turnstones nr. the Boat-Builders.

Out & about

At Newgale early afternoon most of the water had drained from the campsite, 3 Rock Pipits on the damp ground but no Water Pipit. The marsh still held a good amount of water, at least 100 Snipe visible around the margins which was unusual (to see them, at least). On the sea 5 Common Scoter, and a flock of Mallard, Teal & Wigeon presumably displaced from a frozen marsh overnight. A few Mallard still on the unfrozen marsh but only a handful of Teal.

At the Gann 28 Brents on the pool in 2 distinct groups - luckily the colour ringed bird from last week was still present and in the closest flock walking on grass. The left leg has a red ring with a white L on it, and the right leg a white ring with a black K on it. I will submit the details and post the results here when I have them.

At Dale 2 female-type Red-breasted Mergansers (from Black Rock), along with 2 Great Northern Divers and 3 Great-crested Grebes. A relatively meagre roost held an adult (well marked) and a first-winter Med Gull.

Marloes revisited

A female Merlin this afternoon hunting in the fields around the YHA.
Further to this morning`s post :- c180 Canada geese, c150 Lapwing, 50+ Chaffinch - which appeared to be what the Merlin was after. Also 50 Skylarks. On the Mere, Wigeon, Teal & Shoveler.

Mallard Hide;-
1 Coot still - not a common bird on the north coast!
Kingfisher Hide;-
Cetti's singing, also 5000+ Starlings roosting behind appears to have forced the Pied Wagtail roost out?

Just one Purple Sandpiper found this morning with at least 10 Turnstone. 5 Common Scoters off-shore.

Flagpoles 15.00 12th Dec.

This weeks birds

I was getting stir crazy by midweek and dawn on Wednesday saw me at Strumble on a relatively quiet morning. No porps but a Peregrine "waiting on" by the lighthouse decided to while a few moments away by repeatedly dive bombing a pair of Ravens. They dissapeared over "Richards Valley" and I popped down the steps by the lighthouse to find 3 moulting seal pups.

As I was stood there wondering how they had survived the past few weeks, a shrill squeek alerted me to a pippit desperately trying to outfly a merlin. Seven times the Merlin stooped and each time the pippit sidestepped, leaving the merlin to wander off unrewarded.

Later at the Outer Breakwater Fishguard Harbour a cracking Male Black Redstart was seen but flitted off to the rocky area of what used to be the layerage.
Adding to the raptor action at least 3 Red Kites near the car park above Newport on the way to the Gwaun Valley.
Yesterday evening a couple of interesting looking egrets were found by Sam Baxter showing in the fields above the estuary, whilst we were at the Iron Bridge. They flew before we could nail them but they looked like they could be Cattle Egrets, (Sorry Sam, don't seem to have your number ) worth a look there this weekend!

Little Gull

An adult Little Gull seen from the flagpole car park Fishguard Harbour at lunchtime today

Firecrest Goodwick Moor 10th Dec.

A Firecrest by the 5 Bar Gate with the stile was the highlight of an interesting walk around the Moor. There seemed to be good numbers of small birds today including Bullfinches , Goldcrests ( at least 2 ) a female Blackcap & a Chiffchaff. There are quite a few Water Rail calling now as well.
At the Flagpoles a Barwit & a Single Canada Goose with the Oycs , Redshanks & Turnstones. At the Stena Ferry Terminal end a small group of roosting Redshanks & an Adult Great Northern Diver fishing quite close in.Also another Goldcrest in the fir trees on the Harbour side of the road opposite Tesco.

A Blogger Abroad

Currently halfway through a 3 week campervan trip round south island New Zealand. Strange to be the other side of the world with Blackbirds and Songthrushes singing and feeding young. Yellowhammers, Chaffinches, Goldfinches common and flocks of Redpolls(!). In fact the introduced birds are more common than the native ones.
More exotic species seen on a Pelagic from Kaikoura - 5 species of Albatross, various Petrels and all at very close quarters. Also 2 Sperm Whales.
2 Kiwis seen well but briefly at Okarito as well as White Heron and Black Swans.
Heading south to Milford Sound, hopefully for Penguins and more of the amazing scenery.
Photo shows a Salvins Albatross. For more pics click here.

Dale / Gann

At the Gann late afternoon 27 Brents, including one colour ringed bird: red ring on right leg (I think!) and either a yellow or metal ring on the other leg - it was very distant and the light was poor. Hopefully someone will get to read it at high tide. A good number of gulls (mainly LBBGs and BHGs) pre-roost but again distant due to low tide.

Around the corner in Dale a minimum of 10 Med Gulls in the roost (8 ads, 2 1stWs) but probably more in the biggest roost I've seen here so far this winter, which was growing by the minute in the fading light. I also saw the 3 Great-crested Grebes, and eventually 4 Great Northern Divers thanks to Derek's tip-off.

Marloes / Dale

This afternoon at the mere, 140 Lapwing, 1 Backtailed Godwit flying over.
This evening at Dale, 3 Gt Northerns - 1 appeared to be an immature.

Rooftop Herons

I was on the phone to Nick o' Sullivan a couple of days ago (he lives in Llanstadwell ) he suddenly started hollering and cursing and I thought the weather must havefinally sent him raving bonkers...
Apparently two Herons were sitting on his roof contemplating the fishpond. Not sure if this is not the pot calling the kettle black, as Nick must have killed a hell of a lot of fish over the years!

Pembroke -- today

Hi

Your Pembsbirds blogspot is ideal for a visitor with a couple of days in the area. Went looking for the Grey Phalarope yesterday (1st) but no joy. Thought you might be interested in this morning’s sightings of 1 Black-tailed Godwit and 1 Common Sandpiper in Pembroke. The castle pond is tidal just now and the sandpiper was up under the castle. The godwit was on the estuary side but close up to the footbridge, with a Little Egret. Lots of the usual things including 12-15 Little Grebes. Total of 5 Bullfinches.

Hugh Wood
Shropshire Ornithologists

Great Northern Divers

Bashed out to Ticklas Point (2 Great Nothern Divers) and Borough Head this A.M. - Bird Tracking for Annie. This section of lofty, narrow and exposed coast path surprisingly held a good number of wintering Song Thrush along its entire length (the only thrushes), and it was nice to see a flock of 6 Reed Bunting it he short cropped shrubbery of the steep sided slopes. 2 Peregrines played havoc with a flock of 400 Wood Pigeon and a female Merlin gave a great display of clifftop aerial agility as it went after pipits.

Pembroke Dock;-
The Rose-coloured Starling arrived at his bird table at 0830 this am.

A nice male Hen Harrier yesterday afternoon.
(Bethan Evans)

A couple of weeks ago a Grey Heron was seen perched on a roof top on one of the houses that stand above Lower Town, Fishguard...looking & probably spoilt for choice!
(Janet)

Western Roof Heron

I remember quite vividly driving down Barn Street in Haverfordwest one morning a few years back on the way to work, dawn had broken, and on the roof of the old chapel/antiques place (now heading for dereliction) was a Grey Heron - I had a quick double take to make sure it wasn't a plastic one! It's quite a high roof so could potentially see a few ponds from there.

There is quite often a heron perches on the roof of Oriel Jones' (now Dunbia) in Llanybydder. I assume it is after what the kites are after!

Herons

Further to Graham's posting , although i have not seen this in Pembrokeshire , i witnessed it many times when i was a Postman in Luton , Bedfordshire. Around the area which i used to see this most often there was no significant area of water for miles. It was certainly the garden ponds which attracted them.

Urban Herons

This past week single Herons have been seen perched on the ridges of houses in the estate on which I live. Some of the gardens adjoining these houses have garden ponds which are presumably the attraction. The local Jackdaws are not at all keen on the Heron presence but although they have gathered round have been too wary to approach close enough to be in range of the lethal bill. Has anyone noticed similar Heron behaviour elsewhere in the county?
