Gann

No sign of Brian & Derek's Muscovy today, and there was Lisa & I thinking we had got away with 13 days in the Canary Islands without missing a good bird on our patch!  We did see Muscovy on Fuerteventura, but it was whilst not seeing a Red-billed Tropicbird so little consolation...

Approaching high tide this evening there was a good number of Oystercatcher which were on the beach before relocating to Cormorant Island and some others to the Musselwick side.  Really pleased to see Yellow X4, which was ringed in Dublin in 2020 and was at the Gann from 20/4/21 to 29/6/21.  It was seen again in Dublin in August 2021 (at least).

At least 14 Redshank, and single Greenshank and Grey Plover, along with 2 Dunlin and 6 Bar-tailed Godwit. 2 pairs of Shelduck, fingers crossed for a good breeding season for them.

Kete and a wild goose chase

A circuit of Kete this evening was quiet. Plenty of farm activity with gulls mopping up the worms and a scattering of Pied wagtails. Single Wheatear by the lighthouse. 2 pairs of Chough chipping out larvae from the dry ground. A small flock of Linnet in the remaining stubbles. Passing the Gann I stopped to chat with Derek, we hadn't been talking long when we spotted a distant flying largish white winged bird with dirtier coverts that had us a bit flummoxed. It was heading up the marsh as Derek tried to get some photos and I followed it in the optics before quickly dropping out of sight. Derek jumped in the car to check from Mullock Bridge and I walked up to the submerged footbridge but the only birds on the marsh were a couple of Little egrets. However a last look around the pools and there was the culprit, a Muscovy Duck!

Plumstone Yellowhammers

Two Yellowhammers were in a favoured sunny spot near the pony stables after lunch, sheltered from the easterly wind with the local temperature about 20 degrees, a couple of miles away at Roch it was only 13. There was no singing, but a lot of calling.

Yesterday at Stackpole Head a confiding Raven seemed to want to pose and have a chat. I think it may have been curious about my attempts at cronking to him, especially as I was wearing black.

Porth Clais and West

2 Chiffchaff's singing close to the car park. From the coastal path, west - very little in the fog of this morning. A couple of Chiffchaff's sang in sheltered locations. A lone Merlin sat on a rock and 2 pairs of Canada Geese sat on the sea.

Hook - 28th

A walk around the estuary yesterday. Present, the remnants of wintering populations of Teal (30-40 birds) in Sprinkle Pill, Shelduck (42) on the mud flats and Oystercatcher (2). A group of 6 Great Crested Grebes sat in the Western Cleddau, split into displaying pairs. Curlew and the 'shanks seem to have disappeared. As for spring migrants - 6 Chiffchaffs and 4 Blackcaps were singing.

Marloes Mere

A couple of hours around the mere this evening. 5 Swallow, 7 Sand martin, single Chiffchaff. Flock of c200 Linnet, Trehills field. Just 10 Stock dove in the former wildflower field. 17 pair Shoveler and 5 male with lots of courtship going on, 8 pair Teal,  4 pair Wigeon, 3 pair Gadwall, pair Shelduck, pair Tufted duck and Mute swans on nest. No sign of the Glossy at Dale at dusk or roosting at the Gann.

Nolton

My first Wheatear of the year yesterday bellow Rickets Head.

Broad Haven to Druidston

From Vicky Pearson: Early mornings (and some afternoons) between Broad Haven and Druidston (and back!); Sunday 20th to Sunday 27th March

A good mix of singing small birds - wren, linnet, stonechat (lovely to hear him singing not just chat-chat-chatting), dunnock, meadow pippit, blackbird, skylark, and a chiffchaff 3 days running at the bridge at Druidston Haven.

A pair of chough seen on the lower slope around Black Point on 3 days.  Gannet - 10ish - diving close in every day.  The usual group of scoter, numbering about 30, seen everyday until Friday afternoon when there were just 2 and then none today.

Peregrine at Haroldston Chins - at least one bird seen most days, with both adults seen today (4pm).  One on the stack with feathers near by; the other (the female I think - she looked big) on the old nest site feeding on a recent kill.  Good to see them both.

St. David's Head

Migrant searching in the valley's produced eight Chiffchaff and two male Blackcap. Despite the low numbers, it was great fun! Definatly made me wan't to be Skokholm warden...

Otherwise single Kestrel, eight Stonechat and two Rock Pipit.

Castlemartin Corse

At last, a wheatear, at Starman's Hall. At the hide (now with improved screening) still a lot of teal, a pair of greylags, and three black-tailed godwit. At least three Cetti's. A red kite, a buzzard and two chough flew over (the chough to feed on the inland end of Kilpaison Burrows). The usual flock of 13 stock doves.

Exciting new birds (!)

From Ian Smith:

Friday 25th 2022
The Gann 10:35-12:15
2 full summer plumaged Black-tailed Godwits and an extra Wigeon ! (14) plus singing Chiffchaff was the noticeable change.
Otherwise: 54 Oystercatcher; 9 Redshank; 4 Greenshank; 8 Barwits; 1 Grey Plover etc continues to show how steady sunny, warm, often easterlies does not always deliver the birds.  Speaking of which... Glossy Ibis...  How did you guess ? 😕

Higgons' Well

Nice to see a Great White Egret moving about the river on a great walk this afternoon.

Virtualy a summers day, with plenty of springy birds included my first singing Blackcap of the year, and at least 35 Chiffchaff with virtualy all singing, for most of the walk I didn't go five seconds without hearing one-four at a time!

A Common Sandpiper on the river showed really well, and it was amazing to see a Fox, my first ever!

Thursday sightings

From Ian Smith:

Thursday 24th March 2022

Quick visits to Dale (×2), Deer Park, Airfield and The Gann
Seen from Deer Park were 9 Scoter flying south to land off Skomer where thousands of Auks were spread across it's northern waters. A single Wheatear on seaward cliffs with Chiffy and Water Rail by gate access; the latter seen by another Oxon birder.
The Airfield held a Single Wheatear, 4 Pied's and flock of c250 Linnet on Stoney Field; whilst Pond revealed 2 each of Moorhen and Snipe plus single male Reed Bunting.
Informed of my missing Glossy Ibis, by a matter of minutes on Wednesday, because it flies up into trees when disturbed.  Still managed to miss it on another two attempts today!  A Brambling in the car park was some very unexpected compensation.
8 Barwits held steady yet again at The Gann, but increases with a Grey Plover, 4 Greenshank, 4 pairs of Teal and an extra Shelduck (7).  Some, small, changes at last!

Skokholm

Hoopoe today.

Glossy Ibis - Dale

Was in the usual field when I passed at 11am today. Something spooked it though as it took off and flew in the direction of St Anne’s Head.

Dinas Mountain and Pontfaen

From Alf & Carol Williams: Skylarks singing everywhere around Dinas Mountain and five Golden Plover flew in and landed whilst we were on the top of the mountain at lunchtime some showing signs of their breeding plumage. Later about 20 GP's were seen flying north towards Dinas Island . A Blackcap was heard singing on the road above Bessie's at Pontfaen mid afternoon.

Skomer yesterday

Hoopoe found at the Garland Stone by our volunteer soon relocated to the Farm and gave good but distant views; it was a mobile bird. Also, our first Ring Ouzel and Sand Martin yesterday.

Glossy Ibis

From Alan Seago: Still in Dale at 3.00pm Wednesday.  In the muddy pools on the edge of the field as you walk along the road from the car park around the bend behind the Cafe.  Flew around a couple of times without going far and landed in a tree at the side of the road behind the cafe. Didn't seem bothered by the traffic or people walking past the field.

Wednesday sightings

From Ian Smith:

Wednesday 23rd March 2022
10:10-11:55 The Gann
Any hope the sunny conditions with SE breeze would bring new Birds was not to be and that included no Glossy Ibis at Dale, which is likely to continue until others share the important timing of their sightings (?)
3 pairs Teal and same 13 Wigeon as yesterday.  6 Shelduck, 1 Greenshank, 8 Redshank, 1 Dunlin, a reduction to just 48 Oystercatchers but Barwits holding steady at 8 birds.
Quick scan on Airfield showed no promise in oppressive heat but ploughing of field by car park had attracted 190 voracious Herring&LB-b Gulls with 4 Pied Wags.
Chiffchaff reported singing by Broadhaven Hostel.
Fingers crossed for Thursday...

Wednesday, 23 March 2022

Marloes peninsula

Usual circuit from the mere, around the Deer Park and back this evening, and what a cracking evening, at least weatherwise. Chiffchaff everywhere around the mere and the first 2 Blackcap, the large flock of c56 Stock dove were still in the former wildflower field just beyond the Britton Hide. Pair of Tufted duck, 12 Gadwall. 11 Chough (pair by Gateholm, flock of 7 over the Deer Park and a pair by Renney Slip). 3 Wheatear. Barn owl across the road above Slate Mill. Nice to be out.

Glossy Ibis - Dale

From Rob Cox: Glossy Ibis was showing well in the usual field in Dale 22/03/2022

Black Redstarts

A nice walk on Dinas Mountain this morning produced a couple of nice surprises 3 male Black Redstarts together,2 of which where in stunning plumage. The other surprise was a male Dartford Warbler. Plenty of singing Skylarks but I couldn't find any Wheatears.

Tuesday at Llanychaer 3 Crossbills one a nice male also 3 Fieldfares ,there are still several Redwings about in the woods.

Tuesday sightings

From Ian Smith:  Tuesday 22nd March 2022

The Gann 09:35-10:35
68 Oystercatcher 8; Barwit; 3 Redshank and
small waders totalling one in the form of a Ringed Plover.  13 (5m) Wigeon
10:05 Brent Goose 35 arrived down river to land and then graze in Lagoon, before soon leaving East along the north shore of Haven at 10:12
Dale revealed a blank on the Glossy Ibis front at 10:40, ( and again at 12:20 and 17:25) so not lucky third time !  Compensation of Peacock butterfly and Grey Wag by Dale Castle.

Dale Airfield 10:40-12:15  Great to see some 95% of the Gorse Scrub flailed to ground height at long last, with more Skylark and Mipit activity notable in its place.  Still some Linnets and Stonechats.
1 Ringed Plover heard at Stoney Field, where 12 Chough fed nearby along the grass strips in the cracked runway concrete.

St Brides Bay 12:45-15:00 gave views of 2 winter plumaged Red-throated Divers with a handful of Cormorants feeding in similar areas as another  handful of Gannets soared past.   2 Chough heading NE, well offshore, raised question of whether their flight agility means they are able to avoid Peregrine attacks whilst so exposed ?

Back to The Gann 17:35-18:35 (after again  confirming Dale was still devoid of Glossy Ibis)
Brent Geese now down to a group of 11 and another of 7, seemingly unperturbed by people as they fed on the shore.  Still 68 Oystercatcher and 8 Barwits, but a Greenshank had joined the 3 Redshanks, a male Teal with 2 females and only 3 Wigeon now visible.  40 Curlew appeared in the Lagoon as I was leaving.  Offshore Common Gulls reached around 130 and Black-heads over 30, after arriving from direction of St Brides(?)

Monday, 21 March 2022

Cattle Egrets Newport

From Ian Bullock: Walking the new riverside path that goes inland at Newport on Saturday afternoon, there were 8 cattle egrets feeding with grazing cattle. The field is on the E side of the Berry Hill road, N of the river, the first grazed field visible to your left as you climb the rising footpath.  Grid Reference SN065396.  Shorter yellow bill and paler, shorter legs, a surprise after all the Little Egrets along the estuary!

Newport (Sunday)

A stroll along the Parrog yesterday, met Mike Davey who was doing WEB,s count there, he had a Black red on the Iron Bridge, and I found a female type down the boat club end.

Sunday, 20 March 2022

Dale Glossy Ibis

Still close to the road, very tame, only a barbed wire fence between us!

Another Brambling

One in our garden at Orlandon Kilns this morning - not the same as Derek's as it wasn't as smart!! A pretty rare visitor here. Update: Actually not just rare - I have just checked and it's a new garden bird and a new Pembrokeshire bird for us! Further update: A picture - it is a female so not surprising it's not so smart.

Rosemary Royle

Choughs at Tenby

From Keith Cutting: Visiting from Kent I had ten Chough feeding on Tenby golf course between 4.40 and 5.10pm this afternoon.

Thursday, 17 March 2022

Sandy Haven

A nice surprise for Anna - a Great White Egret  floated across the road at Rickeston heading for the upper reaches on Sandy Haven.  Wondering where it came from - a farm irrigation pond or maybe Walwyn Castle lake which is a nice walk around when its not too muddy.

Seems like Chiffchaffs have arrived in numbers. With SE winds coming from the continent this weekend it could be interesting.

Egrets.

2 Little Egrets, 5 Cattle Egrets Pinky- orange summer colour starting to show, In a field just off Pembroke river.

Castlemartin Corse, Barnacle Geese

WEBS take 2 today, having banked a count on the western half yesterday but been unable to cover the inland end, passage through the pines being impossible after the carnage of the storms. Different species use the upper end: today these included two barnacle geese, new to the Corse. Also 4 greylags, and 6 black-tailed godwit feeding with a solitary lapwing. One of the godwit was in bright summer plumage, the others still greyish. More snipe about today, plus a jack snipe, making two with the one I saw yesterday.

I made my way through to where I left off yesterday with a hazardous ditch crossing, numbers of ducks similar (120 teal, 16 shoveler, 5 mallard, plus water rail and moorhen heard). Three Cetti's heard this morning. The 2CY♀ marsh harrier was standing in the field on the Burrows again, and, yesterday and today in the same area upstream of the hide, a flock of 17 stock doves (cf the 12 that settled briefly in front of the hide on 23 February). 2 buzzard overhead.

Wednesday, 16 March 2022

Barnacle Geese

From Fiona Day: A flock of 20 Barnacle Geese have been present at Lower Treginnis, St. Davids this week. I first saw them on Monday and they've been present every day since, often in the field next to the coast path near the copper mines.

Stackpole Head/Bosherston Lakes this morning

A blustery morning on Stackpole Head produced several wheatears, including some displaying males back on territory. One near Mowingword was chased off by a cracking adult male black redstart who was also behaving territorially, although this one was almost certainly a migrant passing through. A few hundred guillemots and small numbers of razorbills were on the cliffs.

Four choughs were later noted feeding in the dune grassland.

A walk up the eastern arm of Bosherston Lakes produced not less than 12-15 chiffchaffs, including small flocks of 3-6 feeding in the low lakeside vegetation. These had almost certainly recently arrived, probably this morning. The local raven was on its nest as were the herons.

Wheatears

From Bethan Mary Evans: Two males this afternoon on SW slope Mynydd Dinas.

Tuesday, 15 March 2022

Dinas Mountain

While watching plenty of ascending Skylarks and parachuting Meadow Pipits a stunning male Wheatear landed on the rock in front of me.

Druidstone towards Broad Haven

From Rob Cox: A walk along the coast path from Druidstone towards Broad Haven today.

There was a large flock of Common Scoters (18+), two larger birds looked like divers not sure.
Two male Wheatears, plenty of stone chats M & F, Skylarks, Linnets, Rock Pipits.
A female Kestrel towards Druidstone beach.
No sign of the Peregrine.

Martins Haven

Quick stroll down from Marloes Mere to the Deer Park. 4-5 Chiffchaff in the hedgerows snatching the midges that were coming off and fleeting rear views at Martins Haven of 2 hirundines. Wheatear by the lookout. The Tufties still on the mere.

Spring migrants x2

Whilst searching for porpoises on a Sea Trust porpoise survey, a sand martin flew into the view of my bins coming in off the sea. brown with a nice breast band, no confusion with its white rumpedcousin!Later on a Chiff Chaff singing not far away from the ocean Lab was my second spring arrival of the day

Sunday, 13 March 2022

Llys-y-fran

I was passing by so had a last look at Llys-y-fran for this winter. 500 LBB, 20 BH gull, 10 Herring gulls, 2 adult GBB, 2 Meds (adult and 3cy) and an adult Common gull at 6:30pm. RH goosander in one of the small wooded bays, 2 m Goldeneye. 10-12 GC grebe. Green sandpiper flying up and later back down the western bank. A lovely still evening with Song thrushes belting their songs out, one in particular was throwing in phrases of nuthatch, buzzard mews, Blackbird pre-roosting calls and kick-kicks of GS woodpecker.

Lochvane Sunday

A week ago our first Chiffchaff , today lots of Skylark singing and pairs of Stonechat everywhere on the coast, but the wintering Jays are still in evidence and the flock of Fieldfare (up to 40) are still feeding in the leek field next door. At the harbour in Solva the Little Egret and pair of Dipper are still showing well.

That Glossy....

Living up to it`s name, shining in the sunlight - watched it with Dave hence the similarity in the photos. Somewhere out there is another singleton of the opposite sex.......

Glossy Ibis - Dale

The Glossy Ibis reappeared in Dale yesterday (David Ord, David Butler) and was still present this afternoon showing really well from the road adjacent to the Boathouse Café.

Teifi & Llys-y-fran

Yesterday afternoon at Llys-y-fran I was to early for a gull roost although over 100 Lesser Back-backed Gull. Great views of ten breeding-plumaged Great Crested Grebe too, and two singing Chiffchaff.

Again up north today around the Teifi Estuary first at Webly where there were a few regular gulls and waders, five Shelduck, and at least three Chiffchaff, at Poppet Sands another six. At Cilgarren Castle at least thirteen Siskin, and plently of common and some uncommon woodland birds.  Finally a dash around Teifi Marshes were the highlight was two singing Cetti's Warbler, and probably my best views ever of ten Curlew on one of the pools, just before heavy rain! All listed on Birdtrack.

Castlemartin Corse

Enough water for some ducks - 80+ teal, 20 mallard, 15 shoveler and a single drake pintail flying around on his own. Moorhen, grey heron, Cetti's - altogether plenty of activity in the reedbed. Just 1 snipe seen, 11 golden plover overhead.

The 2CY♀ marsh harrier is still a fixture, settling for a while in a field on Kilpaison Burrows, about 700m away, the other raptors present were 2 buzzard and a ♀ merlin. Plenty of song - meadow pipit and skylark, chaffinch, dunnock and reed bunting all singing away next to the hide. 28 species for a BirdTrack list!

Friday, 11 March 2022

Elegug Stacks this morning

A brief visit to the Elegug Stacks produced a fine immature male merlin hunting meadow pipits and skylarks in grassland near the Stack Rocks road.

Very large numbers of guillemots were on the stacks, virtually all available spaces were taken up. There seemed to be more birds here today than we usually see in June when the breeding colony is at its peak. It was much too early in the season though to attempt a count, but there must have been at least 10,000  guillemots present, including large numbers on the sea or else whirling around in the blustery south-westerly wind.

Skylarks were displaying near the car park, as were rock pipits on the coast near the Green Bridge. It was also nice to see two male wheatears near the Cauldron.

Reed Bunting with rings

Took this photograph of a Reed Bunting lunchtime today at the Teifi Marshes wildlife centre and have just noticed that it has two rings on its leg, one blue and one orange.

Not sure if this info is any use to anyone.

Mike B.

Footnote:  Teifi Ringing Group???

We've regularly seen a Red Kite in the Little Haven area the last week or so.

Ridgeway fields

A walk up to the Ridgeway to check the state of  the fields that have been an inland wheatear corridor in the last 2 years produced a remarkable flock of 30 stock doves, which BirdTrack thought rather high. They were flying about below me as I came downhill, a vision in grey and black, lovely.

The Gann

Had a stroll along the beach last weekend, the only interest were four GC Grebes on the sea, today however was better with  Dave`s  Brent still present. On the way home about fifteen Stock Doves flew parallel with me along the road past the telephone exchange before heading off to St Brides. At the St Brides junction a Hen Harrier was quartering  the fields before drifting down towards the Gann.

The coast path along Pickleridge has been nicely renovated too.

Dinas Head - Auks

A windy walk around Dinas Head was rewarded with good views of 100+ guillemots and razorbills on Needle Rock, and flying and rafting. Also a few herring and black back gulls and rock doves in amongst them.
